I read this paragraph about the Apollo Moon Mission recently and thought of my clients who struggle in the beginning with tracking their spending and start to question the purpose:
THE APOLLO MOON MISSION – FOLLOWING A CRITICAL PATH On their flights between earth and the moon, it was said, the Apollo ships were off course much of the time. …the spacecraft would wander off its path and the crew would correct-wander off and correct, again and again. It didn’t matter… They got to the moon. They got home. They did it by having the discipline and knowledge to get themselves back on course. They followed not a perfect path, but a critical path.
A new client said to me the other day “ever since I have started tracking my spending I feel paranoid about every penny I spend. It is really uncomfortable”. AWESOME I replied – it means you are paying attention to what you are dong. You are aware which will lead to clarity around where your money goes. It does feel uncomfortable in the beginning it is like changing the way you eat. Eventually it becomes second nature and you don’t find it difficult at all. And like changing the way you eat it is alright if you wander off path from time to time as long as you keep bringing yourself back to your plan and your true intentions. You are following not a perfect path, but a critical path.
